LamiCare Smart HorseĀ Health Monitoring
Project Overview
LamiCare is an app concept created to support horse owners in managing laminitis risk. The app connects with a Brix tester to record pasture sugar readings, helping users understand when grazing conditions may be unsafe.
The aim of this project was to design a simple, approachable tool that makes pasture testing easier to understand and track over time.
Project Type: Mobile App Design
Role: UX/UI Designer
Audience: New Zealand horse owners
Tools: Figma, research, prototyping
Design Challenge
The primary objective was to address the complexities of monitoring equine health via mobile technology. We needed to create a streamlined digital experience that allows users to input data quickly and interpret results easily, focusing on usability within a high-pressure outdoor farm setting.
Design Research
To start, I looked closely at how horse owners spend their days and what health risks horses face in different weather. I found that people really needed a simple way to see health data instantly. By talking to real users, I learned that for an app like this to work, it has to be incredibly fast and easy to use, especially when they are busy working outside on the farm.
01
Research & Discovery
As the solo designer, I began by exploring the equine health space, performing user interviews and market research to understand the specific difficulties horse owners face when monitoring pasture safety.
02
Ideation & Prototyping
Working as a solo designer, I developed low-fidelity wireframes from user findings, prioritizing clear visuals. I built interactive prototypes to refine the experience and present my design decisions.
03
Validation & Testing
I conducted solo usability testing with owners to observe how they used the app. My process involved evaluating accessibility and refining flows based on direct participant feedback.
Seamless Data Visualization
The dashboard on the right simplifies complex health tracking into a streamlined visual summary. By combining intuitive, high-contrast indicators with a calming, natural palette, I ensured caregivers can accurately assess horse wellness and identify critical changes in seconds, even while outdoors.
User Journey Mapping & Flow Design
To design the LamiCare experience, I mapped the full journey of people using the app, from first sign-up through everyday check-ins and follow-up actions. I turned my research into clear stages, touchpoints, and key decision moments, then simplified each step to keep things light and easy. This user journey map shaped the appās navigation, screen flows, and feedback so every interaction feels clear, supportive, and simple to complete.
Outcome
The LamiCare prototype provides a comprehensive framework for proactive equine health management. By integrating testing data with historical trends, the design offers a clear path for owners to mitigate risks and improve their horses' well-being. The final concept demonstrates how a dedicated digital tool can simplify complex environmental monitoring, providing peace of mind to users through data-driven insights and a professional user interface
Reflection
This project emphasized the necessity of balancing technical precision with practical usability. Designing for the equine industry requires a deep understanding of the unique environments owners face daily. Moving forward, the focus remains on expanding the platform's utility through automated synchronization and broader data sets.
