Case Study: MOTAT Upright Rainbow

Kupe's Journey Through Light

Team Caslon.jpg

Project Overview

Kupe's Journey Through Light was a collaborative team project developed for MOTAT's Upright Rainbow exhibit. The project aimed to create an engaging interactive experience that combined the science of rainbow formation with the cultural story of Kupe's journey from Hawaiki to Aotearoa. Designed for children aged 8–10, the game encourages learning through exploration, storytelling, and hands-on interaction.

The Challenge

The existing exhibit provided educational content but lacked engagement for younger audiences. Our team was tasked with designing an experience that would encourage participation while making both scientific concepts and cultural narratives accessible and enjoyable for children.

Research & Insights

Research included observations of museum visitors, analysis of the existing exhibit, and investigation into both rainbow science and mātauranga Māori. Findings showed that children engage best through interactive learning, visual storytelling, and hands-on activities. The team also explored how Kupe used environmental signs and navigation techniques during his journey to Aotearoa.

The Solution

The final solution was a tablet-based interactive game where players assist Kupe on his voyage by completing educational challenges. Children collect clues, solve rainbow-related puzzles, and learn about light refraction while following a narrative journey.

Key Features

  • Interactive puzzle-based gameplay

  • Rainbow and light science activities

  • Kupe navigation storyline

  • Bilingual content

  • Child-friendly interface

  • Educational rewards and feedback

Outcome

The final concept transformed a static exhibit into an engaging educational experience that encourages curiosity, exploration, and learning. By blending science with storytelling, the game creates a memorable experience that helps children better understand both rainbow formation and the significance of Kupe's journey.
